The Tennessee Titans were founded in 1959 as the Houston Oilers and played in the American Football League from 1960. In the 1970 merger they joined the NFL playing in the AFC Central Division. In 1997 the team moved to Tennessee as the Tennessee Oilers, spending one season in Memphis before moving to Nashville. The following year in 1999 they were renamed the Tennessee Titans, a name chosen to reflect strength, leadership and other heroic qualities. The Titans play at the Nissan Stadium in Nashville which has a capacity of just over 69,000. The team colors are navy, Titan blue, red, silver and white.
The Houston Oilers started very well. In their first season in 1960 they finished first in the AFL Eastern Division and progressed to the AFL Championship game winning 24-16 against the Los Angeles Chargers. The following year they repeated the achievement, again beating the Chargers who had moved to San Diego. In their third season they reached the final for the third consecutive time but this time lost out 17-20 to the Dallas Texans in second overtime. One more big loss 7-40 to the Oakland Raiders in the Championship game would follow in 1967 before the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.
The first few seasons in the new league were tough for the Titans and they failed to make the postseason until 1978. After finishing second in the AFC Central Division they won the Wild Card Playoffs against the Miami Dolphins before meeting the New England Patriots in the Divisional Playoffs. Victory in that game took them to their first AFC Championship where they lost heavily to the Pittsburgh Steelers, with the final score 5-34. The late 1980s and early 90s saw some postseason action but they never progressed past the Divisional Playoffs.
In 1997 they moved to Tennessee and two years later became the Titans. In the first season with the new name they finally reached the Super Bowl for the first time. Besting the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Playoffs earned them a meeting with the Indianapolis Colts in the Divisional Playoffs where they scored a narrow 19-16 win. In the AFC Championship game they faced the Jacksonville Jaguars where the Titans dominated the defense and the offense took any chance they could get. In Super Bowl XXXIV the St Louis Rams took a 16-0 lead over the first three quarters when the Titans started their fightback scoring to a tie. The Rams regained the lead and then denied the Titans a game-tying drive on the final play finishing one yard short.
