The San Francisco 49ers were established in 1946 and spent their first few seasons in the All-America Football Conference before joining the National Football League in 1950. They started in the Coastal Division before joining the National Football Conference West Division in 1970. The team in one of the most successful franchises in the NFL and one of the most valuable in sports. They have played at Levi's Stadium since 2014 and the team colors are red and gold.
The 49ers started relatively slowly enjoying little success in the postseason until the 1970s where they lost two NFC Championships both times against the Dallas Cowboys. It was the 1980s that saw the major period of 49ers dominance and success, winning their Division seven times and the Super Bowl four times. In 1981 they beat the New York Giants in the Divisional playoffs to set up another meeting with the Cowboys, narrowly beating them 28-27 to reach their first final. They bested the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 to win the title.
Three years later they returned to the top in a near perfect regular season of 15 wins and just one loss before destroying all opposition in the postseason. First came the Giants who went down 21-10, then a humiliating 23-0 defeat of the Chicago Bears finishing with a 38-16 victory in Super Bowl XIX against the Miami Dolphins. In 1988 they won the first of back-to-back Super Bowls in a thrilling narrow win against the Bengals in a game that went down to the wire. The victory the following year against the Denver Broncos was the complete opposite setting records for points scored by a winning team as the 49ers won the title again 55-10.
During the 1990s the 49ers remained one of the League's strongest teams being a regular fixture in postseason action but there was only one more Super Bowl appearance and a win in 1994 when they beat the Bears and Cowboys before easily winning the title again 49-26 against the San Diego Chargers. From 2003 they entered a 8-year postseason drought before finally making good again and yet another Super Bowl appearance in 2012. Due to a power outage which stopped play for a time the game was nicknamed Blackout Bowl. Baltimore Ravens built up a commanding lead before the 49ers staged a comeback after power was restored but in the end it wasn't enough and the Ravens won 34-31.
