Known by most as the Black and Gold, by their critics as the Aints, or more awesomely, as the Dome Patrol, the New Orleans Saints have had a long and pretty successful recent history in the NFL.
After joining the league in the Eastern Conference in 1967 they started badly, losing their first seven games, finally winning their first game against the Philadelphia Eagles. They finished their first season with just three wins. Nothing changed after they moved to NFC West in 1970 which became a pattern for their first twenty years in the league when they never managed to finish a season with more wins than losses. New Orleans Saints fans must have despaired of ever reaching even the playoffs.
Things started to improve in the late 80s when Jim Mora took over as head coach. In 1987 the Saints finished their first ever season with a winning-record and a Wild Card playoff. Although they lost, the fans at last had hope and in 1991 they won their first Division title. More disappointment came in the playoffs though, as they made three more Wild Card playoffs, losing every time.
Starting the Millennium with a new coach, Jim Haslett, and after winning the Division, the Saints achieved a historic playoff win against the St Louis Rams 31-28. They lost the Divisional playoffs against the Minnesota Vikings, and when Haslett was unable to capture the magic formula of his first season, he was fired in 2005 as the New Orleans Saints were still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
The Saints were about to enter their most successful period with the coming of new coach Sean Payton. They won the Division in 2006 and then the Divisional playoffs in a close game against the Eagles. The Chicago Bears thumped them 39-14 in the NFC Championship but progress had been made. Three years later came the season the fans had been dreaming of for so long. The team finished the regular season 13-3, winning the Division then beating the Cardinals decisively in the Divisional playoffs. In a tense, nail-biting NFC Championship game the New Orleans Saints managed to beat the Minnesota Vikings in Overtime, scoring a field goal to win by 3 points and a chance to go to the Super Bowl. At their very first attempt, (after just 43 years of trying) they emerged victorious against the Indianapolis Colts. Oh when the Saints go marching in!
