The Kansas City Chiefs have some of the most loyal fans in football. Whatever the weather, or however the team are doing, the fans will be there cheering them on. They started as the Dallas Texans in 1960 joining the American Football league before moving to Kansas in 1963, and taking the name Chiefs. They joined the National Football League in the 1970 merger and since then have played in the American Football Conference West Division. Since 1972 the team has played at the Arrowhead Stadium located in Kansas City, Missouri, which has a capacity of around 76,000, and is famous for its noise levels setting a world record in 2013 in a game against the Oakland Raiders. The team colors are red, gold and white.
Success came early for the Chiefs winning the AFL Championship in their third season in 1962 as the Dallas Texans. In a close game against the Houston Oilers the Texans led after the first two quarters before the Oilers came back to tie the game 14 all at the end of normal time. In the second period of OT rookie Tommie Brooker kicked a 25-yard field goal to give them the Championship.
The team’s greatest achievement came in the 1969 season. After finishing second in the Western Division behind the Oakland Raiders they faced the New York Jets in the Divisional Playoffs and came away with an easy 13-6 victory. In the next round they came up against the Oakland Raiders and despite going behind in the first quarter they came back to dominate the next three quarters winning 17-7 to take them to their first Super Bowl. Super Bowl IV was the fourth and final AFL-NFL World Championship game before the merger in 1970 when the Conference system began. The Minnesota Vikings started the game as National Football League Champions and favorites to win. They took an early lead with a field goal in the first quarter but the Chiefs defense proved to be too strong and they dominated finishing the game as 23-7 winners.
The following five decades have not been as good to the Kansas City Chiefs with the 1970s and 80s in particular having only two playoff appearances. In 19993 they made it as far as the AFC Championship for the first time but lost to the Buffalo Bills. In 2018 they lost the AFC Championship again to the Patriots in a close defeat 31-37 in OT.
