The Detroit Lions originated in Portsmouth, Ohio as the Portsmouth Spartans and joined the National Football League in 1930 before moving to Detroit in 1934. In 1970 it joined the National Football Conference Central Division and in 2002 moved to the North Division where it currently plays. Also since 2002 the team has played at Ford Field, a multi-purpose domed stadium with a capacity of 80,000 for football. The Lions colors are Honolulu blue and silver.
The Lions started reasonably well. The year after their move to Detroit in 1935 they won the Western Division and faced Eastern Champions, and defending Championship champions, the New York Giants in the National Football League Championship game. Detroit scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win the game comfortably 26-7 and take their first national title. It would be almost two decades before they were in contention for titles again.
The 1950s were the best period for the Lions appearing in four Championship finals and winning three. In 1952 they won the National Conference on the way to beating the Los Angeles Rams in the playoff. In their second NFL Championship they faced the Cleveland Browns in the first of three successive meetings in the final. The Lions controlled the game and finished victorious 17-7. The following year they won the Western Conference and again bested the Browns in the final. This time the game was much closer with the Browns leading until late into the fourth quarter when Jim Doran scored a Lions touchdown and Doak Walker converted to win the game by just one point, 17-16. 1954 saw the Browns take revenge with a 10-56 demolition of the Lions in the final. In 1959 they would meet once more and the Lions would return the favor winning the Championship 59-14 for their fourth national title.
The past sixty years since their golden 1950s have been hard for the team and fans alike. The Lions have been in an extended drought and are one of the only franchises in the NFL never to have appeared in the Super Bowl. Postseason has been rare and most often met with losses in Wild Card Playoffs. The best result came in 1991 where they emphatically won the Divisional playoffs against the Cowboys 38-6 only to go down by a similar margin, 10-41, when they met the Washington Redskins in the NFC Championship. Fans are hopeful the future will be brighter.
