The Denver Broncos started in the American Football League in 1960 before joining the NFL as part of the 1970 merger playing in the American Football Conference West Division. Since 2001 they have played at the Broncos Stadium at Mile High, one of the larger stadiums in the NFL with a capacity of over 76,000, second only to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC. The team colors are orange, navy blue and white.
Life in the AFL was tough for the Broncos in their first ten seasons and they didn't make it to the postseason at all. After joining the NFL in 1970 things didn't go much better until the 1977 season. For the first time in their history they won their Division and then thumped the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-21 in the Divisional Playoffs. A close win 20-17 against the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship took them to their very first Super Bowl where they went down 10-27 to the Dallas Cowboys. The late ‘80s were a successful but frustrating period when they made it to three Finals in four years, but lost each time. In 1986 they lost Super Bowl XXI 20-39 to the Giants but that was followed by sizeable defeats 10-42 to the Redskins in SB XXII and, worse, 10-55 to the 49ers in SB XXIV.
The Broncos would achieve their first Super Bowl success in the 1997 season winning back-to-back titles. After finishing second in their Division they won the Wild Card Playoffs against the Jaguars before a narrow win in the Divisional Playoffs against the Chiefs. Another narrow win against the Steelers in the AFC Championship took them to their fifth Final against the Packers where they emerged victorious 31-24. The following year they did it again but this time with much more emphatic victories winning 38-3 against the Dolphins in the Divisional Playoffs, 23-10 against the Jets to win the AFC Championship and finally a 34-19 win against the Falcons to win Super Bowl XXXIII.
It would be fifteen years before they made their next Super Bowl in the 2013 season. This time, however, they suffered one of the greatest defeats in Super Bowl history going down to the Seattle Seahawks 8-43. Just two seasons later they were in the hunt again meeting the Panthers in SB 50. The Broncos controlled the game from the start and finished winners with 24-10 and their fourth Super Bowl title.
