They are known as America’s Team and since they joined the National Football League in 1960 the Dallas Cowboys have become one of the best-loved, most-followed and valuable teams in the world of sport.
They started badly, with a 0-11-1 record in their first year and losing their very first game against The Pittsburgh Steelers in what would become one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL, most notably in nail-biting Super Bowl meetings. Since then a number of teams have joined the list of historical and Conference rivals. The Cowboys have played in NFC East since 1970 and have had numerous memorable encounters with the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and most prominently, the Washington Redskins. In the postseason and playoffs they have also developed a healthy competition with the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers.
The 1970s was a successful time for the team with five Super Bowl appearances. The Dallas Cowboys reached their first Super Bowl in the 1970 season but lost 16-13 to the Baltimore Colts. The following year they reached the final again and this time emerged victorious against the Miami Dolphins, allowing them to score a record-low 3 points. The 1975 season saw their first Super Bowl matchup against the Steelers when they lost in an exciting 4th quarter. They beat the Broncos in Super Bowl XII in a dominant display where defensive tackle Randy White and defensive end Harvey Martin were both named MVP, the only time in Super Bowl history that two players received the honor. In XIII the Cowboys faced the Steelers a second time and again, the game went down to the wire with the Steelers once more coming out on top 35-31.
The following decade was a lean time for the team and it wasn’t until 1992 that their fortunes improved. The Buffalo Bills were appearing in their third consecutive Super Bowl having lost to the Giants and Redskins, but the Cowboys were just too good and won their third Final 52-17. The same teams battled it out the next year in Super Bowl XXVIII with the same result. The third matchup against the Steelers came in the 1996 Super Bowl and finally the ‘Boys could have their revenge, winning the game 27-17.
Success has been scarce since the Millennium, winning the NFC East but losing several Divisional Playoffs. But with the highest average attendance in the NFL fans of the Dallas Cowboys know they just need to keep the faith.
