Cleveland Browns were established in 1944 and have a long and complicated history. In 1946 they started in the All American Football Conference which was a rival to the National Football League before joining the NFL in 1950. After the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 they played in the American Football Conference Central Division until 1995 when the team was suspended for three seasons while owner Art Modell established the Baltimore Ravens with existing Browns personnel. The Browns returned as an expansion team playing again in 1999 and from 2002 competing in the AFC North Division. Since 1999 the team has played at FirstEnergy Stadium which has a capacity of almost 68,000. The team colors are brown, orange and white.
The Browns completely dominated the four seasons in which they played in the AAFC winning all four Championship games, and that form continued into their first season in the NFL. In the postseason they beat the New York Giants in the Conference Playoffs before meeting the LA Rams in the NFL Championship. In an extremely close game the Browns came from behind in the fourth quarter scoring ten points to win the game 30-28. They would go on to reach the final for the next five seasons winning twice more, against the Detroit Lions in 1954 with an impressive 56-10 final score, and the next year against the LA Rams 38-14. Over the next fifteen seasons they would make five more Championship games, winning one more in 1964 with an emphatic 27-0 win against the Baltimore Colts.
From 1970 to their suspension in 1995 the Browns had sporadic postseason action with the best results coming in the late 1980s where they won Divisional Playoffs and reached three AFC Championships but were beaten in all three games by the Denver Broncos. In 1986 they were unlucky to go down 20-23 in overtime and the following year losing out 33-38 while their final attempt in 1989 ended with the score at 21-37.
Since returning from suspension the Browns have struggled enormously on and off the field with almost no postseason to speak of, and a problem finding a regular quarterback. A loss in the Wild Card Playoffs with the Steelers in 2002 can hardly be considered a success and in 2017 they set the unwelcome record of a 0-16 regular season, only the second team to do so. Browns fans are hoping the future holds better records.
