The Cincinnati Bengals started in 1968 as a member of the American Football League as its tenth and final franchise. Two years later they joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger playing in the American Football Conference Central Division until 2001 before moving to AFC North. The team has had some success over its four decade history but hasn't won a Super Bowl. Since 2000, the team has played at the Paul Brown Stadium. Named after the club's founder Paul Brown, the stadium has a capacity of over 65,000. The team colors are orange, black and white and their nickname comes from a football team that had previously played in the city.
The Bengals achieved very little in their first years in the AFL and NFL, rarely making the postseason. In 1970, ‘73 and ‘75 they lost in the Divisional Playoffs and it wasn't until 1981 when they made it past that. After winning their Division they faced the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Playoffs and came out on top, winning 28-21. In the AFC Championship game they came up against the San Diego Chargers and eased through the game with a 27-7 win, giving them their first Super Bowl appearance. The San Francisco 49ers controlled the first two quarters getting to halftime with a 20-0 lead. The Bengals rallied in the third quarter with a touchdown and two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter but the 49ers kicking game was just too good and they won the game 26-21.
The Bengals' next chance came in 1988. A Division title was followed by a 21-13 win against the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Playoffs and another win against the Bills to take the AFC Championship for the second time. In Super Bowl XXIII they would once again face the SF 49ers. In an extremely tight game the 49ers opened the scoring with a 41-yard field goal before the Bengals took a 13-6 lead in the third quarter. The 49ers scored early in the fourth quarter to tie the score before the Bengals answered with a field goal to retake the lead. With just 34 seconds left on the clock the 49ers scored a winning touchdown to take the game and deny the Bengals their first Super Bowl victory.
The past three decades have been lean years for the team with postseason action being limited to Wild Card Playoffs. The fans are hoping for more.
