Who are the Monsters of the Midway? Why, it's Da Bears, of course! They started life in Decatur, Illinois in 1920, and were known as the Decatur Staleys, before moving to Chicago the next year, then finally getting the name Chicago Bears in 1922. With the Arizona Cardinals, they are the only founding members left in the NFL. The team has had a long and somewhat successful history with patient fans waiting for their next victory..
Their first success came in 1932 as they were named NFL Champions and the following year they won the first NFL Championship in a close game, beating the New York Giants 23-21 by scoring a touchdown with less than two minutes on the clock. The 1940s saw more success for the Bears as they won four more Championships, but the following decades were less than successful, winning just one more Championship, again against the Giants, in 1963.
The Chicago Bears returned to winning ways in the 1980s after Virginia McCaskey took control of the franchise with the death of her father, and Mike Ditka was hired as coach. After losing the NFC Championship to the San Francisco 49ers in 1984, the team finally made their first ever Super Bowl in 1985. Both the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots made their debut in Super Bowl XX but the Bears would dominate, especially in the middle quarters, finishing the game with a then-record margin of victory, 46-10.
Through the rest of the 1980s the Bears dominated their division but struggled in the playoffs, while the 90s were even worse. Things improved with the introduction of Lovie Smith as coach in 2004, winning NFC North the next year. In 2006 they finished the regular season 13-3 and met the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional playoffs. After tying the score in the fourth quarter, the Bears won by a field goal in OT. They made it through the NFC Championship by crushing the New Orleans Saints to face the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI. Despite starting strongly in rainy conditions, the Bears couldn't cope with the power of Vinatieri's kicking as the Colts emerged victorious, winning the game 29-17.
Chicago Bears fans are more grizzly than cuddable, especially in their rivalries with other teams including the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions. Whatever the future holds in terms of success in the league, those rivalries will never change!
