The Baltimore Ravens were established in 1995 as an expansion team playing in the American Football Conference Central Division before moving to the North Division in 2002. Their name comes from the poem The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe who lived and was buried in Baltimore.
The Ravens play at the M&T Bank Stadium which has a capacity of over 71,000 and the team colors are black, purple and metallic gold.
Despite their short history in the NFL the Ravens have had several notable successes in the postseason winning AFC Championships and Super Bowls. For their first four seasons they did not make the playoffs but in 2000 they went all the way. After finishing second in their Central Division with a 12-4 record they progressed to the Wild Card Playoffs where they thrashed the Denver Broncos 24-3. In the Divisional Playoffs they faced the Tennessee Titans where the game was tight for the first three quarters before the Ravens took control in the final quarter to win. That set up their first AFC Championship game against the LA Raiders. The Ravens defense was simply too strong and they took the game easily 16-3 sending the Ravens to their first final. Super Bowl XXXV was held on January 28, 2001 and again the Ravens defense was the deciding factor. Baltimore won the game beating the New York Giants 34-7 to become the quickest expansion team to win the Super Bowl in NFL history.
Over the next eleven seasons the Ravens made it to the postseason seven times with two AFC Championship appearances in 2008 and 2011 losing to the Steelers then the Patriots. In 2012, however, they would reach the Super Bowl for the second time. They won their Division with an unconvincing 10-6 record to next win against the Indianapolis Colts in the Wild Card Playoffs. The Divisional Playoffs against the Broncos was decided in double overtime when Justin Tucker kicked a 47-yard field goal to win 38-35 taking the underdog Ravens to the Championship game. A win against the Patriots led to their second final, this time against the San Francisco 49ers who had never lost a Super Bowl final game. The game was also known as the Harbaugh-Bowl as two brothers Jim and John Harbaugh were head coaches of each team. (It was also known as the Blackout Bowl due to a power outage during the game). The Ravens won the close game 34-31.
